Katanning LCDC was formed in 1990, under the Soil and Land Conservation Act (1945), initially in response to erosion and dust storm issues. Over time, KLCDC has grown to be a successful and effective landcare group, driven by a passionate local volunteer committee, addressing local environmental issues. These include salinity, waterlogging, flora and fauna conservation, wetlands, soil health, sustainable agriculture, water quality and community capacity building.

Projects currently underway include:
"Catchment Plans Coming to Life" - involving on-ground works with 21 farms, a catchment-wide integrated surface water management system design and smart-farms training.
"Living Streams Stage 4" - completion of the conversation of a steep-sided drain within Katanning townsite to a natural creek system.
"Enhanced Dams" - developing farm dams into functional wetlands for both agricultural and environmental benefits.

Planting of over 4.5 million trees and erecting over 2000km of environmental fencing, securing over $13 million in public funding, State and National Landcare Awards.
Major projects have included Restoring Lake Ewlyamartup, the Upper Coblinine Catchment Demonstration Initiative, QFH Productive Landcare Demonstration, Saline Bush Foods project, Katanning EcoWeek, Improving the Efficiency of Farm Dams, and Protecting the Endangered Carnaby's Cockatoo.
