Best Practice Grain Storage Management

This project boosts communications connecting grower groups and growers with extension support around on-farm grain storage capacity and good grain storage procedures.

A GRDC funded project, GGA is collaborating with GRDC Stored Grain project lead Primary Business, connecting grower groups and growers with extension support around on-farm grain storage capacity and good grain storage procedures.

Workshops and Presentations

Ben White, GRDC grain storage project partner in WA and agricultural engineer at the Kondinin Group, will be conducting workshops and offering advice on grain storage. Free talks and demonstrations at spring field days and harvest reviews are available or a tailored workshop with group members can be arranged.

Content could cover advice on grain storage hygiene, temporary storage, bags or bunkers, to help growers maximise grain quality retention and seed germination.

Mouse and insect hygiene for stored grain

It is a busy time of year for growers, but it pays not to overlook hygiene around seed and grain storage infrastructure. GRDC grain storage extension specialist Ben White recommends cleaning up any spills or tailings from the seed cleaner to minimise potential mouse and insect damage. “Promptly cleaning up silo and auger hoppers, seed cleaning tailings and any grain spills eliminates a potential food source for pests,” he said. Six Steps to Prepare for above average Harvest

A wet start to the winter cropping season and crop production forecasts of 46.8 million tonnes – 13 per cent above the 10-year-average – have given many grain growers the confidence to start looking ahead at harvest logistics and grain storage capacity for this year.

Read more about the six steps recommended by Chris Warrick from Primary Business, who leads the GRDC Grain Storage Extension Project.
